Biological Sciences

Biological sciences is the study of life and living organisms, their life cycles, adaptations and environment. Microbiology is a biological science involved with the study of microscopic organisms. In light of Campus closure regarding COVID-19, employees in the college of Natural and Health Sciences are working remotely and faculty are teaching classes virtually in an effort to best support our campus community. In the biological sciences, a common way to study the impact of a part of a system is to entirely abrogate it. For example, to determine the effect of a gene on an organism, scientists often compare knock-out animals, animals lacking the gene in question, to their wild-type counterparts.

Although these debates are serving to stimulate the science, future advances must be focused on how to direct new knowledge that is acquired to advancing the human condition and medical science. JoVE Biology includes techniques and experimental approaches in the fields of cellular, molecular, and organismal biology. From a series of workshops, you’ll gain critical knowledge in cellular aspects of biology. Bucknell University undergraduate students traveled to with biology professors Sarah Lower and Gregory Pask to western Pennsylvania to do research and scientific outreach to the general public at the annual Pennsylvania Firefly Festival.

Visit the websites of the following professional bodies to find out more about courses and careers in biological sciences. Figure (PageIndex1): Biology: The Study of Life: A collection of organisms clockwise from top left: bacteria, koala, fern, toadstool, tree frog, tarantula. A study of how life came to be the way it is today, evolutionary biology involves anything from exploring organisms at the cellular level to the study of entire ecosystems.

Physiology is the study of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical processes of living organisms function as a whole. Cell Theory: There are three parts to cell theory — the cell is the basic unit of life, all living things are composed of cells, and all cells arise from pre-existing cells. In addition to subject-specific skills, biology graduates develop valuable transferable skills such as data analysis, communication, teamwork and time management.

It gave me a year to focus on my skills in bioinformatics and computational biology and to hone my specific research interests before beginning my Ph.D. Through the program, I spent a year splitting my time between learning, teaching, and conducting research, which helped convince me that I would be comfortable continuing to learn, teach, and conduct research during my Ph.D. and beyond. These Institutes bring faculty from Biology and other departments with biological interests into contiguous lab space.
